Emerson medium

Emerson medium is a rich medium formulated by Emerson et al (1) to isolate mould and Actinobacteria. It is composed of beef extract, yeast extract, peptic digest of animal tissue, dextrose and sodium chloride. This medium is also used for the maintenance of mould and actinobacteria pure cultures.

Preparation

Per litre of distilled water: Beef extract 4.0 g Yeast extract 1.0 g Peptic digest of animal tissue 4.0 g Dextrose 10.0 g Sodium chloride 2.5 g Agar 20.0 g Final pH (at 25°C) 7.0

Instructions Mix well all the components in 1000 mL of distilled water. Sterilize by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure (121°C) for 15 minutes. Mix well and pour into sterile Petri dishes.

Notes

For growth in liquid culture, Emerson Agar can be made without the agar.
