Rhodococci are nonsporulating actinomycetes in the family Nocardiaceae along with Nocardia. They are known for their ability to catabolise a wide range of organic compounds as carbon sources including polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), toluene and lignocellulose-derived aromatic compounds. Some species have large genomes (8-10 Mb), encoding a large number of catabolic enzymes. Many of them are oleaginous, producing a large quantity of neutral lipids such as triacylglycerol.

Rhodococcus equi - pathogen causing pneumonia in foals.

Rhodococcus erythropolis - known for the ability to degrade alkanes.

Rhodococcus jostii - known for the ability to degrade PCB and lignocellulose-derived aromatic compounds.

Rhodococcus opacus
