Streptomyces griseus

Background

Streptomyces griseus is the producer of streptomycin, the first remedy for tuberculosis. Its first complete genome sequence was reported in 20081. S. griseus is also known for its production of an extracellular signalling molecule, A-factor, which turns on both morphological development and secondary metabolite production including streptomycin.

Growth & Maintenance

S. griseus grows well on YMPD agar and liquid media.

Sporulation

S. griseus sporulates well on YMPD agar medium.

Strains

Streptomyces griseus IFO 13350

Protocols

Escherichia coli IR539 can be used to prepare plasmids mimicking the methylation profile of Streptomyces griseus to improve the transformation efficiency2.
