Streptomyces venezuelae

Background

There has been some confusion over the multiple iterations of the Streptomyces venezuelae genome sequence (sve, sven_15 and vnz) generated at the John Innes Centre. To clarify, all the Streptomyces venezuelae work at JIC has been performed with the same strain. The final and complete (vnz) genome sequence of this strain has been determined and submitted to the NCBI database under reference NZ_CP018074.1. The sequenced strain has also been deposited with the NRRL culture collection under stock code NRRL B-65442. Please use the NZ_CP018074.1 genome sequence and vnz gene identifiers.

Please note that Streptomyces venezuelae NRRL B-65442 carries a 158-kb linear plasmid (vnz pvnz here in StrepDB; NCBI reference NZ_CP018075.1) and this was not assembled in the first iteration of the genome sequence (sve).

In the NRRL culture collection database, you will see that it says that the origin of NRRL B-65442 is "unsure". This is because we cannot unambiguously trace the continuous lineage of the JIC strain back to the 1940s. However, its genome sequence is more than 99.999% identical to ATCC10712, and so it is clearly descended from the Caracas/Yale/Burkholder strain (Ehrlich et al 1947. Science 106: 417; Ehrlich et al. 1948. J Bacteriol 56: 467-477) and not from the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station at Urbana/Gottlieb strain (Gottlieb et al. 1948. J Bacteriol 55: 409-17).

Growth & Maintenance

Sporulation
  • Sporulation can be achieved after 3-5 days growth on MYM medium (liquid or solid) containing trace elements.
  • To make stocks, follow Spore Stocking protocol, using MYM medium.
